Medicare Open Enrollment Is Here: Why Your Primary Care Doctor Should Factor Into Your Decision

October 12, 2026 · By Dr. Shivam Desai, MD · West Atlanta Primary Care

Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 every year, and the mailers, TV ads, and phone calls promising lower premiums or extra perks start flooding in right about now. It's worth paying attention to — but the plan with the lowest premium isn't automatically the right choice. One of the most overlooked factors in switching Medicare plans is whether your primary care doctor is actually in the new plan's network. Losing access to a doctor who knows your history is a real cost, even if it doesn't show up on the premium comparison chart.

What Open Enrollment Actually Changes

During this window, Medicare beneficiaries can switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, switch Part D prescription drug plans, or enroll in a plan for the first time if they're newly eligible. Changes made during open enrollment take effect January 1. Outside this window, your options to switch are much more limited, so this is the time to actually evaluate whether your current plan — or a new one — fits your needs.

Why Your Primary Care Doctor Should Factor Into the Decision

Primary care is where continuity of care actually happens — a doctor who has tracked your blood pressure trends, medication history, and lab values over several years catches problems that a new provider, starting from a blank chart, simply can't catch as quickly. Switching plans and losing in-network access to your current doctor means starting that relationship over, often with a wait for a new-patient appointment slot. Before enrolling in a new plan based on premium or extra benefits alone, it's worth confirming your primary care doctor is in-network — or, if you're shopping for a new PCP anyway, confirming the plan you're considering gives you access to one you'd actually want.

Questions to Ask Before You Switch

A few questions are worth answering before you commit to a new plan: Is your current primary care doctor in the new plan's network? If not, how far would you need to travel to find an in-network PCP you trust? Does the new plan require referrals to see specialists, and if so, is your PCP willing and able to coordinate those? And does the plan's prescription drug formulary cover the medications you're currently taking without a sudden price jump? A lower premium that comes with a worse care experience isn't actually a better deal.
