Back to School, Back to You: The August Health Checklist Every Adult Needs
August 17, 2026 · By Dr. Shivam Desai, MD · West Atlanta Primary Care
Every August, families in Douglasville and across Douglas County shift into high gear. School physicals get scheduled, supply lists get checked off, and calendars fill up fast. But here's what often gets missed: the adults doing all that organizing rarely stop to think about their own health. If you can't remember the last time you had a checkup — or the last time a doctor actually reviewed your labs — August is as good a time as any to change that.
Why Adults Skip the Doctor (And Why That's a Problem)
The most common reason adults give for skipping annual checkups isn't cost or fear — it's that they feel fine. The problem is that many of the conditions primary care is designed to catch early don't cause obvious symptoms until they've been progressing for years. High blood pressure earns its nickname "the silent killer" because it rarely hurts. Pre-diabetes affects millions of Americans who have no idea. Elevated cholesterol produces zero warning signs until it contributes to a heart attack or stroke. Feeling well is not the same as being well — and routine primary care exists precisely to bridge that gap.
Are You Due for an Annual Physical?
If it's been more than a year since your last comprehensive physical exam, you're overdue. A full annual physical at West Atlanta Primary Care includes a head-to-toe exam, a review of your vital signs and weight trends, updated bloodwork (blood sugar, cholesterol panel, kidney and liver function, thyroid if indicated), blood pressure measurement and history review, a medication review, and a conversation about any symptoms or concerns you've been putting off. It's also the visit where we make sure you're up to date on vaccines — including flu shots, which we strongly recommend before fall. Most of this is covered at no cost under preventive care with most insurance plans.
August Screenings Worth Asking About
Depending on your age and risk factors, August is a good time to discuss: blood pressure screening (recommended for all adults annually), fasting glucose or HbA1c for diabetes screening (starting at age 35, or earlier with risk factors like obesity or family history), cholesterol panel (every four to six years for low-risk adults, more often if you have risk factors), colorectal cancer screening (starting at age 45 per current guidelines), and skin checks if you've been spending more time outdoors this summer. For women, cervical cancer screening and breast cancer screening timelines vary by age — bring up your last Pap smear and mammogram at your visit. For men over 50, prostate screening is worth a conversation.
Chronic Conditions: Get Ahead of Fall
If you're managing an ongoing condition — diabetes, hypertension, asthma, thyroid disease, high cholesterol — August is a smart time to check in before the fall and holiday season, when routines shift and follow-ups get pushed back. Lab values can drift between visits. Medication doses sometimes need adjustment. Seasonal changes also affect conditions: asthma tends to flare in fall as mold spore counts rise, and blood pressure can tick up as stress levels climb with back-to-school schedules. Getting labs and a medication review done now puts you in a better position going into the busiest stretch of the year.
Mental Health: The Stress Season Nobody Talks About
Back-to-school season is a known stress spike for adults — particularly parents, caregivers, and anyone with a schedule that just got significantly more complicated. Anxiety, sleep disruption, mood changes, and fatigue that begins or worsens in August are worth mentioning at your visit. Primary care is an appropriate starting point for mental health concerns. We can screen for anxiety and depression, discuss lifestyle strategies, and refer you to behavioral health specialists when needed. You don't have to be in crisis to talk about stress — and catching it early makes a meaningful difference.
Book Before September Fills Up
Between back-to-school season and the start of flu season, September and October appointment slots fill faster than any other time of year. If you've been meaning to schedule a checkup, August is genuinely the best month to do it — before the rush. West Atlanta Primary Care is accepting new patients in Douglasville and throughout the West Atlanta area. You can book online through the healow app or call us directly at (678) 401-4597. Same-day and next-day slots are often available. Your health doesn't have to wait until everything else settles down — because it rarely does.
